Dr. Mona Al Sumaie
Mona Al-Sumaie, MBBch, DCH, MSc in Human Nutrition, IBCLC is the Director of Community Nutrition Promotion Department, Public Authority of Food and Nutrition, Kuwait. Country Focal Point about Maternal, Infant and Young Child Nutrition.
Dr. Al-Sumaie is the coordinator of the Kuwait Nutrition Surveillance System (KNSS) since 2000, and has played a key role in incorporating the new WHO standards within.
Dr. Al-Sumaie has been the coordinator of the Breastfeeding Promotion and Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) implementation programme in Kuwait since 1998.
Dr. Al-Sumaie was the first in Kuwait to receive an IBCLC certificate in 2003 and has been serving as the country coordinator for the exam since; she was lately recertified by exam in 2013. She played a fundamental role in forming the Kuwait Lactation Consultants’ Society (2004), which is also headed by her. She has successfully established an ongoing preparatory course for the IBCLE exam in Kuwait.
Dr. Al-Sumaie has received extensive training in breastfeeding policy and management. She has also been trained as a trainer in the New WHO Growth Standards. She acted as a course director and a trainer in both these areas locally and in the Gulf region. She has implemented numerous training of trainers courses in both these areas nationally and regionally.
She became an active member of IBFAN Arab World in 2003 and was later elected President in 2012. She was one of the Middle East Region candidates who received training on WBTi, then published the first WBTi Kuwait report in 2010 and the second in 2015. She is a member of WABA’s International Advisory Council, a member of the Marketing Committee of IBLCE and an active member of the Board of Directors of the local non-profit BirthKuwait mother to mother support Group.
In her career, Dr. Al-Sumaie worked as a pediatrician for 10 years in Kuwait public hospitals. She has served as a visiting lecturer at the Kuwait Nursing College. Dr. Al-Sumaie has collaborated with research groups nationally and internationally and managed to publish several scientific papers. Dr. Al-Sumaie is a pioneer in the breastfeeding movement in Kuwait and in the Middle East.
